Teachers all over the world are struggling to get students because of various reasons mainly to do with struggling economies due to COVID 19. Teachers with a degree and a TEFL certificate equally face the challenge. I, however, have seen teachers with no degrees making it during this time, and the “qualified” teachers do not understand it at all. Well, from my experience within this industry, you do not succeed because you teach with a degree but because you use a program- based teaching method. This means you can teach English online without a degree and produce significant results. Students want to learn for specific reasons, and if you provide solutions for their specific reasons, then you surely will get students!

3 Methods to Teach English online without a degree
There are two methods of teaching: 1) general teaching, and 2) program-based teaching. There are three ways of delivering these: 1) teaching with an ESL company,
2) creating a teacher profile on a teaching platform and
3) Starting a freelance teaching business.
I talk much about the third option in my last post. Now teachers who want to teach English online without a degree need to differentiate themselves from the rest to get students in this highly competitive field. I always say having a degree does not mean you can teach. Of course, I do not dispute certain competencies that come with having one, but also having one does not guarantee you being an excellent teacher. What I have seen is a teaching method is important more than anything else.
The Best Teaching Method
Program- based teaching is whereby you choose a specific area to teach and align your curriculum to focus solely on that. I often refer to this as choosing a niche. Focusing on a specific program allows you the teacher to engage your student at their exact point of need, and you help them achieve their desired goals.
You provide solutions to problems, and that makes you stand out of the rest. No one will ask if you are teaching with a degree or not, but your results will justify why you are teaching!Teachers who provide solutions to students' specific needs stand out above the rest. They become special teachers. Click To Tweet
How to choose a niche
|Step 1:||Select an industry (could be an industry you are interested in or have experience with) e.g. Select “Medical ” industry.|
|Step 2:||Google “job titles in the medical industry” and identify job titles: doctor, nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, etc.|
|Step 3:||Choose one profession you are interested in and see how much value you can give in that field.|
When teaching English online, choosing a niche is not enough. You need to consider these three aspects:
Are you passionate about that niche you have chosen?
– This is a very important aspect. Yes, you need to make money, but you still need to enjoy the money-making process. You need to choose an area you are passionate about. It may not be an area you have vast knowledge on, but if you are passionate about it, you can research and create amazing lessons on it.
If you plan on teaching English online as a full-time business then you need to be honest with yourself. Choose a niche you are passionate about.
Probably a simple way to do this is to check which students you enjoy teaching. That should give you an idea of what you like.
2. Does your niche meet a specific need?
-Passion is not enough to give your teaching business growth. Does your niche meet a specific need? Students look for teachers because they have a need to be met. Let’s say you choose this as your niche, “conversational skills for the medical professionals who want to work in English-speaking countries”. Do you meet a specific need with this niche? How valuable is the need? One thing I learnt whilst teaching English online is that clients will pay you according to their perceived value of the service you give them. So make sure your niche addresses there specific need and you can command premium rates easily.Teachers who meet student's specific needs can command premium rates easily. Click To Tweet
3. How urgent is that need?
If you have gone through step 1 and 2, then your niche is most likely to the one. One last thing just to be sure you are pursuing the right niche is to check how urgent that niche is. Now that you are sure of the specific need your students have, the last step is to know how urgent their need is.
Using the previous niche I mentioned, how urgent is it for medical professionals to learn conversational skills so they can work in English-speaking countries. The urgency in this niche is once medical professionals learn conversational skills in English, they can expand their businesses. Serious professionals will consider your message as a call out to them.
The 3 aspects above have a direct effect on pricing. If a service addresses a specific need urgently, then its value is perceived high and attracts top rates.
Will I get students online?
Most teachers who want to teach English without a degree, doubt themselves and often wonder if they will get students. Of course, you will! Like what I have just explained, what is important is to offer a clear program and align your messages to that. Make sure when you advertise your messages are clear and spell out the urgency so you attract the right students.
With niche teaching, you are a specialist and not a general teacher. Just like in the medical field, you are practising as a gynaecologist or dermatologist and not a general practitioner. This means also with your rates they are higher than that of a general teacher.
This explains why program based teachers make more money than general teachers. They also work less too because they focus on one area and work on improving it. Unlike general teachers who spread themselves over all topics, working so hard but not perfecting their skill and still get paid peanuts!
I have just revealed to you the secret on how to teach without a degree. Not only teaching, but making money out of the teaching. It is possible. It is a pity most teachers do not have the time to build a foundation for their business. They, however, have the patience to work for ESL companies for so many years getting paid very little. The only reason you are worried about a degree is that you want to work for an ESL company. If you want to work on your own, then you shouldn’t worry.
Start teaching today. Get down to work!
